Pioneer Basic represents a new means of supporting Linux by providing an unprecedented 7-year lifecycle. 7-years means that you won't have change your system frequently with releases and that for 7-years you'll be provided updates for security and major changes to applications. Technology Alignment maintains it's own set of repositories based on Debian. New releases for Basic products will continue to be released over 7 years based on Release Packs. Release Packs will provide new versions based on 3 series when there are just too many updates that must be pushed out to the desktop. If you maintain your Basic 3 series release product, you won't need the Release Packs.
